Naturalisation_Becoming a Dutch citizen

Description

There are different reasons for becoming a Dutch citizen.

  • It is possible that you want a Dutch passport to travel or work in Europe
  • A person who has the Dutch nationality can remain in the Netherlands, and also has the same rights and duties as the Dutch
  • Becoming a Dutch citizen is handled by the IND and it takes about a year

Requirements for naturalisation

  • Over the age of 18
  • You reside in the Netherlands for more than 5 years, the Antilles or Aruba and have a legal residence permit
  • You have been married or been the registered partner of a Dutch person for three years
  • You were an Dutch citizen in the past
  • You have a residence permit for an indeterminate time
  • Naturalisation examination. This is not necessary if you are sufficiently integrated and can speak, read, write and understand Dutch. Or if you have passed the complete integration exam or have passed an equal Dutch exam
  • You have not had a prison sentence in the past four years, or any other form of disciplinary measures
  • You are prepared to give up your present nationality

Consequences for changing you nationality

By naturalising your present nationality can change...

There are three possibilities

  • You automatically lose your present nationality
  • You do not lose it automatically but can choose to do so
  • Your country of origin does not accept your nationality change and therefore you have double nationalities.

Request procedure

If you comply with the necessary requirements, you can make an appointment with the Civic Affairs department for the preliminary information.

  • You will then make a new appointment to submit your request and pay the fee
  • The municipality will send their recommendation to the IND
  • The IND determines if you will or will not receive the Dutch nationality
  • If you become a Dutch citizen, you will receive an official decree from the Queen.

Do you have children living in the Netherlands? Then you can request the Dutch nationality for them at the same time.

What should you submit?

  • An extract from the personal records database (GBA), not older than 6 months. If you were born outside the Netherlands you must be able to submit the original documents and certificates in a current language or translated by a certified translator. Almost all documents from abroad must be legalized or have been provided with an 'apostille' (marginal note).
  • You present residence permit
  • Your present passport
  • In the case of a married person the official marriage certificate shall indicate who is the lawful husband or wife. Or proof of divorce.
    You must be able to submit the original documents and certificates in a current language or translated by a certified translator. Almost all documents from abroad must be legalized or have been provided with an 'apostille' (marginal note).
  • Proof of divorce or deregistration of partnership from you previous partner.
  • Naturalisation examination. This is not necessary if you are sufficiently integrated and can speak, read, write and understand Dutch. Or if you have passed the complete integration exam or have passed an equal Dutch exam.
  • Proof of income.
  • Civil servant may ask you for additional information.
