Jan van der Heijden: inventor, painter, entrepreneur, marketeer

Jan van der Heijden (March 5, 1637 – March 20, 1712) was an important personality in the 17th century in the Low Countries. He was a gifted painter, he invented the use of fire hose, improved the fire engines, organised the first real volunteer fire brigade in his part of the world and wrote and illustrated the first book on the subject of fire fighting.

Peter Snellen (teacher and fire fighting historian) will tell you about his life and work and his special talents. In the museum you can see one of his fire engines, a catalogue of his paintings, a facsimile of his ‘Brandspuitenboek’ and some original prints.

Invitation to Excelsior and ASH High School Band Concert

American School of The Hague High School Band, Grade 8 Band and the Excelsior Music Society Band will perform on Sunday, March 10th  from 15:00-16:30, in the ASH Theatre. This special concert features the musical works of Robert W. Smith, who will be coming to visit American School of The Hague in March as a guest composer and conductor.
The aim of these three bands playing together is to, not only harmonize musically, but also harmonizing culturally by connecting ASH students to the Dutch community. Doors open at 14:30, with a reception following the performance.
All are welcome to attend, and we hope you can join the community for this wonderful collaborative musical performance.  It truly is our honor to work with such professionals as the Excelsior Music Society Band. We hope you can join us.

STET English Language Open Air Theatre Performances

British Open Air Theatre Company ILLYRIA has been bringing top quality entertainment since 1991 to local and international audiences for well over two decades, so it’s time to pack a picnic and sit back and enjoy as they turn their attentions to one of Shakespeare’s historical plays, Henri V and The Twits, a superb tale by Roald Dahl.

The cast Illyria bring for Henri V are an experienced and intrepid band of professional actors who perform Shakespeare’s plays entirely uncut and direct from the First Folio, the most authoritative edition of Shakespeare’s plays. Uniquely among open- air theatre companies Illyria’s artistic director, Oliver Gray, has published articles on verse-speaking and athat Illyria’s performance style is the most authentically Elizabethan to be seen! So don’t miss them perform this, one of the greatest of Shakespeare’s history plays! Illyria is one of the few theatre companies that have been granted permission by the heirs of Roald Dahl to perform his works on stage in David Wood’s adaptations. So The Twits is a unique performance to be enjoyed!

Get out your picnic hampers and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Raadhuis de Paauw. Grounds open two
hours before the performance. Do take insect repellents, warm clothes etc with you. Bad weather does NOT stop the performance!
